HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA! Wishing you, our readers, friends, and family a very happy July 4th Independence Day celebration!
Some history about July 4th.... In 1775, people in New England began fighting the British for their independence. On July 2, 1776, the Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, the final wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved, and the document was published. The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence was on July 8, 1776. Delegates began to sign the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. In 1870, Independence Day was made an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1941, it became a paid holiday for them. The first description of how Independence Day would be celebrated was in a letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776. He described "pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations" throughout the United States. However, the term "Independence Day" was not used until 1791. Interestingly, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both signers of the Declaration of Independence and presidents of the United States, died on July 4, 1826 - exactly 50 years after the adoption of the declaration.

We at New Mexico's INFLUENCE Magazine wish you all a very heartfelt and celebratory Juneteenth. Please take a moment to read a bit about this important historical holiday below!
"Slavery in the United States can be traced back to the 16th century when Spanish explorers brought African slaves with them to the New World. It lasted until the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect on January 1, 1863. On that date Texas was largely controlled by forces fighting for the Confederate States, which opposed the abolition of slavery. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. In Galveston, Texas, the newly freed slaves held large public celebrations and so laid the base for future Juneteenth activities. The word 'Juneteenth' resulted from the words 'June Nineteenth' being combined together in speech. After 1865, Juneteenth was mainly celebrated in Texas. Parks have been established on land bought by former slaves to hold Juneteenth celebrations in the Texan cities of Austin, Houston, and Mexia. However, it is now a state holiday or observance in more than half of the US states and there is a campaign for Juneteenth to become a national holiday or observance throughout the nation. Juneteenth celebrations are also held in other countries around the world, including Ghana, Honduras, Japan, Taiwan, and Trinidad and Tobago." New Mexico's INFLUENCE Magazine commemorates and recognizes our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and colleagues during LGBTQ+ Pride Month!
"Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally." #pridemonth #pridemonth2022 #newmexico #lgbtqpride We at New Mexico's INFLUENCE Magazine honor and recognize our fallen heroes this Memorial Day 2022. We pray and wish for you all a peaceful and restful holiday with your families. Some background on Memorial Day: "Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that from 1971, the Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date." Women of Power: An Interview with Major Brittany “Blitz” Trimble, USAF || Season 1, Episode 35/25/2022 We are honored to feature Major Brittany "Blitz" Trimble, USAF, as one of our seven "Women of Power" featured in the MAY-JUNE issue of New Mexico's INFLUENCE Magazine. Major Trimble was also kind enough to join us on this third episode of our first season talk show! Brittany Trimble was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, and has an Air Force veteran pilot father, who later became a commercial pilot for Federal Express (FedEx).
Major Trimble, however, never had any prior experience in piloting aircraft prior to joining the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer following college. She later went on to become the only female in Holloman Air Force Base's inaugural F-16 Basic Course - and later, ended up being the only female in her Squadron during her time serving in Korea and Japan. Major Trimble later covers what she teaches at Holloman Air Base, and what rookie F-16 fighter pilots can expect with her as an instructor. Additionally, she informs us that her base trains a whopping 50% of all F-16 fighter pilots and nearly 24% of all USAF pilots overall. She also discusses her experiences as a female fighter pilot instructor, her career challenges, leadership notes, and lends advice to others looking for success in their chosen fields. Had an incredible time at Holloman Air Base's 2022 Air Show. Lots of wildly talented pilots and beautiful F-16 Vipers on display - we had a blast!
